Welcome to March! Second only to the festive period in December, this month might be the most exciting month for food businesses this year. From the start of Ramadan, to International Women’s Day, to Mothering Sunday, and even Easter, there is a lot to be excited for in March.
Especially with the holy month of Ramadan fast approaching, food businesses have a unique opportunity to cater to the needs of Muslim customers and participate in the spirit of community and sharing. According to a 2023 survey, the most popular Ramadan shopping time was early March (from 1st to 15th). So if this year is anything like 2023, you need to prepare for what’s coming with these simple tips.
Understand Ramadan traditions and customs ?
Take the time to learn fasting practices and the significance of communal iftars (breaking of the fast). Understanding these cultural aspects will help you better serve your Muslim customers and create a welcoming atmosphere in your establishment.
Craft Ramadan-friendly menus ?️
According to the same 2023 survey, Moi Moi is the most preferred Ramadan dish by Nigerians. You can also include a variety of wholesome and nutritious options, such as dates, grilled meats, and refreshing beverages, to cater to different tastes and dietary preferences.
Adjusting operating hours and service times ⏰
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, so it’s a good idea to extend your opening hours to accommodate customers who are looking to dine before or after the iftar meal. Additionally, offer pre-order and delivery options to provide convenience for those observing the fast.
Partner with local mosques and community organisations ?
If your business has the capacity, you can forge partnerships to sponsor Iftar meals or host charity drives to give back to those in need during this blessed month.
As you prepare to embrace the spirit of Ramadan, remember that Vendease is here to support your business every step of the way. Ensure that your restaurant is well-equipped to provide a memorable Ramadan experience for your customers.
Hi Koko,
I recently started making and packaging some chin chin to sell to my community members in my local government and I’m unsure if it’s necessary to register my products with NAFDAC. It’s a very small business and I don’t make a lot of money from it so is NAFDAC registration necessary right now?
Hi Amaka,
According to the Food, Drugs and Related Products Act:
“No processed food, drug, drug product, cosmetic, medical device or water shall be manufactured, imported, exported, advertised, sold or distributed in Nigeria unless it has been registered in accordance with the provisions of this Act or regulations made under it.”
Therefore, we always advise every food business owner who sells packaged food items to undergo the NAFDAC registration process to avoid paying unnecessary fines when reprimanded. Take a look at the registration guidelines for micro-enterprises like yours and start the process as soon as you can.
